Introduction

The Centre de Traitement Electronique des Documents, located at the Université Catholique de Louvain, produced this database of Patrological texts covering authors of the 2nd century through 15th centuries. The CLCLT-3 CD-ROM contains the complete Latin texts of the Corpus Patrum Latinorum (including the Corpus Christianorum, Series Latina, and the Continuatio Mediaevalis), as well as the Vulgate, Pseudepigrapha of the Old Testament, the complete works of Augustine, Jerome, and many others.

Viewing the Texts

To open the CD-ROM database:
  • Load the CD-ROM into the drive
  • Select the CLCLT-2 Icon from the ETexts folder.
  • CLCLT-2 provides help screens in one of four languages (English, French, German, and Italian) and you must choose a language before CLCLT-2 will fully load.
  • CLCLT-2 will then display the main search screen.

To view the table of contents:

  • Use the PGUP/PGDN keys to position the cursor in the field you wish to browse.
  • You may browse contents for Auctor, Titulus operis, or Aetus fields.

To view citations:

  • Press F8 and indicate a sentence number.
  • Press ENTER.

To view the full text:

  • If you wish to see the entire text of an individual selection, scroll the selection to the top of the screen and press Enter.
  • Textual variants have not been included except where noted.

Searching the Database

To go to the Search menu:
  • The standard search menu should open automatically, when you open the program.
  • If it doesn't, contact the Electronic Resources Center staff.

To search by author:

  • From the Auctor box, press F2 and select Browse to see a list of choices.
  • Select an author from the Browse list and press ENTER.
  • Repeat this procedure to select other authors, who will be connected by OR (a comma).
  • Note that if you choose more than one author, all the information may not appear on the field line.
  • Press ENTER to search to confirm your choices.
  • Press ENTER again to search.
  • Select ESC at any time to clear fields.
  • Select F3 to see the results.

To search by title:

  • Use PGDN to position the cursor in the Titulus field.
  • Select F2 and then Browse to see a list of choices.
  • Repeat this procedure to select further titles, which will be connected by OR (a comma).
  • Note that if you choose more than one title, all the information may not appear on the field line.
  • Press ENTER to search to confirm your choices.
  • Press ENTER again to search.
  • Select ESC at any time to clear fields.
  • Select F3 to see the results.

To search by era or genre:

  • Use PGDN to select the Clavisfield.
  • Enter the Clavis Patrum Latinorum code for an individual work.
  • These correspond with H. J. Frede's revision of Dekker's Clavis Patrium Latinorum (1961), Kirchenschriftsteller: Verzeichnis und Sigel (1981).
  • You may browse the Clavis field using F2, Browse.
  • Likewise, use PGDN to select the Aetas to search patristic authors, medieval authors, the Vulgate, or the Pseudepigraphs of the Old Testament as groups.
    1. Patres latini
    2. Medii aevi scriptores
    3. Biblia sacra iuxta vulgatuam versionem
    4. Corpus Pseudepigraphorum latinorum Veteris Testamenti
  • Note that if you choose more than one era or genre, all the information may not appear on the field line.
  • Press ENTER to search to confirm your choices.
  • Press ENTER again to search.
  • Select ESC at any time to clear fields.
  • Select F3 to see the results.

To search more than one option:

  • Fill in the your search choices and press ENTER twice as above.
  • Note that the database default or searching several fields at once is AND (within the individual fields, it is OR), which means that the software will look for all your choices together.
  • See Searching by Formae for advice on changing defaults.

Searching by Formae

To search the formae field:
  • Use the PG DN key to move through the search filters until you reach the Formae field.
  • Type in desired terms in the Formae field or use the index F2, Browse.
  • Press ENTER to send your search to the database.
  • Notice that CLCLT-2 will indicate the number of sententiae in which your search appears at the bottom right hand corner of the screen after it has searched the database.
  • Press F3 to display the sententiae.

To combine terms in the Formae box:

  • Use + (AND), , (OR), # (NOT).
  • For example, uidetur+mihi (no spaces will find only these items with both those terms.
  • Using rogemus, oremus, will find items with either of these terms.
  • Genus#dicendi will find all sententiae with the former term and not the latter.
  • You may also use parentheses to specify processing order.
  • For example genus+(hominus, dicendi) will retrieve genus and hominus or dicendi.

To search for a phrase:

  • Simply type the phrase with a space between the words.
  • To wit, uidetur mihi will pull up all the poems with that phrase.

To search for two words near each other:

  • / specifies a distance beween two forms.
  • daemonicae/2angelicae retrievess daemonicae and angelicae, or angelicae and daemonicae with a maximum of two words between them.
  • % specifies an order of appearance as well as proximity between two forms.
  • daemonicae%2angelicae works like the above example, but finds daemonicae and angelicae in that order.

To search for variant spellings:

  • Like most of the textbases, CLCLT-2 retains the original orthography of the text. The editors note that &quotorthographic regularity of certain works is a sham."
  • If a single character is uncertain, type a ? in place of that character.
  • Like so, dic?mus finds dicamus, dicimus, dicemus, etc.
  • If more than a single character is uncertain, type a * in the appropriate place.
  • You can use only two * in any single word though.
  • prae* finds forms beginning with prae-.
  • *atr* finds forms containing -atr-.
  • *ibus finds forms ending with -ibus.
  • *-g finds Greek words and characters.
  • You may also use these wildcards together (but only one * can be used with the ? character).
  • Like so, A?mitt* finds words beginning with A followed by another character, followed by -mitt- and a series on unknown characters.

Viewing Results

To view the sententiae:
  • Select F3 to view the list of retrieved items.
  • Use the arrow keys to view the next and previous occurrences of your search terms.
  • Use PG UP/PG DN and HOME/END to browse through the list.

Saving and Printing

To save your results to disc:
  • Press F5 while in the sententiae display screen to save search results.
  • You should see a set of options:
    1. Write to writes your search results to a disk or a printer.
    2. Text format saves your search results as either ASCII or FORMATTED text.
    3. Number of sentences... saves all the sentences in your search results or a single sentence.
    4. Save search criteria will save the search expression you typed in to get your results.
    5. Save memento saves brief chronological and bibliographical data of each author represented in your search results.
  • CLCLT-2 will not save more than 30 sentences of continuous text per citation.
