Travel
Houston is served by two airports: Bush Intercontinental (IAH) and Hobby (HOU). Bush Intercontinental is a Continental Airlines hub and is also served domestically by American Airlines, Delta, United Airlines, and US Airways. International carriers with destinations to Bush Intercontinental include Air Canada, Air France, British Airways, KLM, and Lufthansa.
Hobby Airport is a destination mostly for domestic flights. Carriers with destinations to Hobby are AirTran, American Airlines, Delta, JetBlue, and Southwest.
On Arrival in Houston
The best option for reaching the conference hotel (Houston Marriott at the Texas Medical Center) is an airport shuttle. Vans from Supershuttle will be chartered for our use from each airport at a cost of $25/roundtrip from Bush Intercontinental and $20/roundtrip from Hobby. In order to secure a place on the shuttle at these rates, you must make that selection on your registration form. Wednesday vans (probably one from each airport on that day) will make the trip in the late afternoon; Thursday vans will run roughly 2-5pm; and Sunday vans will run soon after the end of the conference at noon.
You may also hire a van on your own from Supershuttle. The cost for a shared-ride van is $24/one way for Bush Intercontinental and $19/one way for Hobby. A one-way taxi ride (Yellowcab) to/from Bush is $52 and to/from Hobby is $33.
Travel time to/from Bush Intercontinental is 35-40 minutes, and to/from Hobby is 25-30 minutes.
Lodging
The Houston Marriott at the Texas Medical Center (6580 Fannin Street) will provide the accommodations for the SSCM conference. The Marriott is a block away from the campus of Rice University and about 10-15 minutes by foot from the Shepherd School of Music. Rooms include either a single King-sized bed or two doubles. The conference rate is $129 per night. In order to book your room, call 713-796-0080 and mention the “Rice School of Music Conference” to get our rate. Check-in is 4pm; check-out is noon.
