Rice Children's Campus

In January of 2007, Rice announced plans to construct a child development center on the west side of Chaucer Drive between Rice and University Boulevards. The facility is designed to provide a secure and enriching educational environment for the children of Rice employees. When completed, the new center will accommodate 84 children, infants to five years of age.

Deconstruction of three existing buildings at the project site (5502, 5508 and 5512 Chaucer) took place in September of 2007, and plans call for construction of the new facility to be complete in summer 2008.  As part of Rice’s commitment to sustainability and green building practices, the existing structures at the site were carefully dismantled and the building materials recycled to minimize environmental impact. Plans call for many of the bricks from the existing buildings to be reused in the construction of the new facility, which will be a single-story, 9500 square foot building with a distinctive angled roof line designed to admit natural light and maximize energy efficiency.

As it does when constructing any building, Rice consulted an urban forester about preservation or relocation of existing trees on the site of the university's future children's center.  Because of the footprint of the building, the location of outdoor play areas, and the fact that some of the trees are prone to shedding large limbs or bear toxic fruit, it was determined that most of the trees and large shrubs on the site would have to be removed or transplanted for the safety of children and to make way for the new structure. In the opinion of Rice's tree consultant, none of the trees and shrubs slated for removal were considered good candidates for successful transplantation. As part of its current multiyear building campaign, Rice has committed to a net gain of trees across all its planned projects and will augment the trees preserved at the Rice Children's Campus site with additional plantings once construction is complete. The new trees planted will be Texas natives and trees adapted for our environment. For more details on Rice's green building practices, please visit www.rice.edu/construction.

The Rice Children’s Campus will be operated by a highly qualified child education provider whose employees will park off-site in the university’s Greenbriar lots. The facility will have fifteen on-site parking spaces for pick-up and drop off in addition to available on-street parking.
