Wan Gang
President of Tongji University

Dr. Gang WAN graduated from the Civil Engineering Department of North East Forestry University in 1978. In 1981, he got his Master’s Degree in Sc. Eng from the Structural Theories Research Institute of Tongji University and thereafter became a lecturer in Tongji University. In 1985, he went to Germany to study at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Technical University Clausthal. And in 1990, he obtained doctor’s degree from TU Clausthal with outstanding performance.

In 1991, after entering the Audi Corporation, he was in charge of the visual development of automobile and formed a unique developmental system for Audi. In 1996, he was promoted to be the Technical Manager of the Production and Technology Division. The important industrialized projects and creative innovations under his leadership ensured the streamlining of Audi A4 and A6 and thereby made significant profits. In 1994, he began to devote himself to teaching and served as Guest Professor and Supervisor of doctoral candidates at TU Clausthal and later at Tongji University.

In 2000, at the invitation of the Ministry of Science and Technology, he came back from Germany, and took the position of Chief Scientist and Leader of the work team on the 863 Key Electric Automobile Project. Under his leadership, in 2003, the group developed Start No.1, the first hybrid fuel cell car in China. In the International Challenge of Clean Energy Automobile in 2004, Start No.2 won the best award of 5A. Dr. Wan has 3 world-level patents and he has also applied for 36 national patents, among which14 were approved. In 2005, Start No. 3 was successfully produced and passed the assessment of the Ministry of Science and Technology. And it had an excellent performance in the 8th International Challenge of Clean Energy Automobile in 2006.

Dr Wan was appointed Assistant President in 2002 and Acting Vice President in 2003. In July 2004, he became President of Tongji University. He is also Director of New Energy Automobile Engineering Center. He has been Member of the 10th CPPCC, and was elected Member of the Standing Committee of CPPCC in 2005.
