Dr. William H. Glick
Dr. William H. Glick is dean and H. Joe Nelson III Professor of Management at the Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Management, Rice University in Houston, Texas.
Prior to joining the Jones School, Dr. Glick was the chair of the Department of Management and a Dean's Council of 100 Distinguished Scholar at the W. P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University, Tempe. He was a visiting professor at INSEAD in 2002. Prior to joining the ASU faculty in 1995, he was the director of the Business Honors Program at the University of Texas at Austin. He taught at UT Austin from 1981 to 1995.
During his first year as dean at Rice University, Dr. Glick initiated a strategic planning process involving many stakeholders, and led several efforts to enhance excellence in teaching, research, and value creation for the school’s stakeholders. The collaboratively developed strategic plan that outlines the school’s mission, plans for growth, and elements of differentiation. Through numerous discussions with the Jones School stakeholders, the mission was articulated as: Leading Thought, Shaping the World: The Jones School excels in developing principled, innovative thought leaders in global communities.
Implementation of the new strategy includes launching new programs such as the Rice MBA for Professionals program. This new offering for working professionals was immediately successful with more demand than anticipated. The new strategy also involves developing several areas of excellence including energy, healthcare, entrepreneurship, and real estate. These areas of industry expertise complement the school’s strengths in finance, accounting, marketing, leadership, ethics, strategic management, and communications.
Dr. Glick’s primary teaching and research are in the areas of knowledge management, job and organizational design, and business process redesign. As a prolific scholar in top journals, he was inducted as one of 33 charter members of the Academy of Management's Journals Hall of Fame. He was also named as one of the top 100 authors in management based on the numbers of citations to their research in five top management journals. While chair of the Department of Management, he helped Arizona State University gain international recognition as a top 20 leaders in research and education that develops and promotes effective managerial practices. By the end of his tenure, the department went from being in the top 60 to receiving multiple top 5 research rankings.
Dr. Glick received his Ph.D. in business administration from the University of California-Berkeley in 1981 and his A.B. in psychology from the University of Michigan in 1975.
