Baker Institute Rice Undergraduate Internship Program

About the Internship Program: The James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy is now accepting applications for intern positions. This is your chance to work directly with Institute Fellows and Rice Faculty on exciting areas of research. The internship program is designed to provide Rice university undergraduate students with experience working in issues of public policy and in a non-profit environment. The internships are oriented towards providing students with research experience, writing and editing opportunities, office administration experience, and experience working events and representing the Baker Institute to our sponsors.

There are three internship sessions: Fall, Spring and Summer. The fall and spring internships are available exclusively to undergraduate university students, with a preference for Rice University students; The fall and spring sessions are paid internships on a 10 hr/wk basis. There are summer internships available for both undergrad students and rising high school seniors; The summer sessions are paid internships on a 40hr/wk basis.

3-4 internship opportunities per session are typically available in each of the following Baker Institute programs: Tax and Expenditure Policy Program; Energy Forum; Health Economics Program; Science and Technology Program; Transnational China Project (Asian Studies); Chinese Culture; and the International Economics and U.S. Foreign Policy Program.

For this fall, 2007, we are seeking interns for the following research programs: Energy Forum, Science and Technology Policy, Tax Policy, Foreign and Domestic Policy and Chinese Culture. These are paid internships on a 40 hr/wk basis. The work may involve research, writing, editing and office work including copying, filing, etc.

Who May Apply: For our fall and spring internships, we welcome all Rice University undergraduate students to apply. Rice undergrads have a preference for the Baker Institute internship program. However, other university students may be considered for an internship in the event that a Rice undergraduate student is unavailable. For our Summer internships, we welcome to apply university undergrads and rising high school seniors.

Expectations of the Student: The internship program expects the following commitments from selected students:

For internships during fall or spring sessions:
  • commitment spanning the duration of the semester
    • Fall Semester - September through December
    • Spring Semester - January through May
  • a minimum requirement of 10 hours per week, preferably conducted in 3 hour increments

For internships during the summer session:

  • commitment spanning a consecutive, 6 weeks period
  • a minimum requirement of 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 9am - 5pm

When to Apply: The internship program application process is on a rolling basis. Therefore, we consider and accept applicants as they apply and according to our needs and internship availability at the time. We typically choose interns for each session according to the following time frames:

We ask that our intern applicants provide a cover letter of stated interest - why you would like to intern at the Baker Institute and what are your areas of interest - and a brief description of any related experience; Be sure to state for which intern position you are applying.

For rising high school senior applicants
Internship opportunities at the Baker Institute for rising high school seniors are only available to students in the following high schools: Lamar, Bellaire, and Austin. These internships are arranged through the high school counselor; Please contact your high school counselor regarding your interest in an internship opportunity with a program in the Baker Institute. The counselor should then contact Jason Lyons directly to coordinate your application.
