Databases

Information Technology offers hosting for FileMaker Pro databases on a centralized, managed server running the latest version of FileMaker Pro Server Advanced.

Email

Find out how to configure your personal email account. Learn how the DSPAM tool can be used to prevent most spam from reaching your in-box, and more on the email page.

Printing

Departments all have their own printers, but where can students print? Discover the locations for student-use printers, charges for printing to them, and how to print to these devices from classrooms and labs on the printing page.

Accounts: NetID and Single Sign-On

Retrieve your NetID and learn how Single Sign-On will help reduce the number of passwords you are required to use at Rice.

Web Design and Hosting

The Web Services group provides exciting designs, hosts sites, and builds applications for Rice customers. For free site analysis or to explore some of this group's innovative work, see their web site at http://webservices.rice.edu/.

Media Services and Events

Connect to the Rice Network

If you're new on campus and just want to plug in your office or college computer, here's how. If you are going to be off-campus (across the street or across the ocean) and want to connect to the Rice Network, contact the Help Desk for information on using VPN.

Telecommunications

Students, it's BYOP (bring your own phone), but the Telecommunications group ensures that every college room on campus has phone service with voicemail features. If you need long distance service, you have several options. For faculty and staff, department phones come in several varieties and services vary by department. In some departments, staff members may not need to make long distance calls and in others, every office phone may be able to direct dial long distance numbers. For instructions on using your phones or for long distance options (calling Rice directly, calling with a calling card, etc.), see our telecommunications pages.

Hardware Recommendations

The Technology Marketplace is the online shopping resource that allows you to use Rice-specific discounts on university or personal purchases. For recommendations on the types of features to look for in your new computer, see our guidelines in Technology Marketplace.

Software Programs

Decisions, decisions, decisions! When it comes to software programs do you need to buy your own copy, download one for free, or license a copy? Can you buy the software at an educational discount? To add a twist to the decision, you may need to purchase the media required to install the software as well. It's true that these days, purchasing and licensing copies of software programs don't necessarily include the media. To find out how to get popular Rice software applications, see Technology Marketplace.

Research Computing Support

For research projects that required advanced computing environments, support for the server, cluster, or applications may extend beyond typical desktop support. The Research Computing group is composed of specialists with experience in large-scale and complex computational tools.

Instructional Technology Support

From help with OWL-Space, Rice's Course Management System (CMS), to demonstrating the use of a Smart Podium to a new faculty member, the Educational Technologies staff support the tools and technologies necessary for today's fast-paced educational environment. Visit http://ricetv.rice.edu/ for help and more information.

Service Level Agreements

Service Level Agreements (SLAs) are in effect.

Identity Management

Identity Management is the set of standards, procedures and technologies that provide, distribute, link and maintain electronic credentials to individuals and maintain authoritative information about the holders of those credentials.
