Storage.rice.edu Ownership Fix October 14-17, 2006

The Office of the Vice Provost for Information Technology will modify ownership information on select home directories in our central storage server October 14-17, 2006. (Your home directory is where you can store up to 1GB of personal files and data in storage.rice.edu. Some students call their home directory their U: drive or their Owlnet drive.)

What is being done?

When Owlnet home directories (the U: drive on Owlnet PCs) were migrated to the new storage server in August, some file ownership information was set incorrectly. Information Technology will run scripts to reset the ownership of these files to the correct value.

When will this be done?

IT will make the ownership changes during the fall recess between Oct. 14 and Oct. 17.

Who will it affect?

The ownership problems associated with the Owlnet file migration did not affect all users. We will scan for bad owner information and apply changes only to the affected user home directories.

What should you expect?

Although we expect these changes to be transparent, they may affect the performance of the storage server. With the assistance of our storage vendor, we will monitor the storage system carefully while we make changes.

What if problems are seen after the change?

Should you experience any issues, please notify the IT Helpdesk and we will address them individually. The Help Desk will be open from 8AM-5PM during the recess.
