Rice E-mail Unrestricted Alias Publication a.k.a. Global Mail Alias

By default, all Rice employee and student E-mail addresses and E-mail aliases work on the campus mail gateway servers. This means E-mail sent to John Doe (with a NetID or vanity alias of jdoe123) is accepted through jdoe123@rice.edu and jdoe123@mail.rice.edu. There are several independent mail servers at Rice and these servers will not accept mail for you unless you opt-in to global alias publication. For example, John Doe would not get email sent to jdoe123@mems.rice.edu unless he opted into unrestricted alias publication. Users of these systems may always send e-mail to you addressed to jdoe123@rice.edu independent of this option.

Because independent mail servers are not centrally-controlled, they are typically much more vulnerable to SPAM. By opting in to the unrestricted alias publication, you will significantly increase the amount of SPAM you receive.

To opt into global mail alias publication, use your NetID to logon to the online form at: https://my.rice.edu/GMA/
