Help Desk
Information Technology staff can answer questions, point you in the right direction or diagnose problems on your computer. To request help, submit your question to http://helpdesk.rice.edu, send e-mail to helpdesk@rice.edu, call xHELP (4357), or stop by Mudd 103. Help Desk consultants can answer questions or make referrals to other staff who can arrange for office visits.

Classrooms and Labs
Many classrooms are equipped with multimedia equipment from digital projectors to computers in podiums. Classrooms equipped with computer and audiovisual resources enable instructors to integrate technology into the instructional environment. Labs with computers can also be reserved. Although the Registrar's Office ultimately schedules classrooms, the above link can help you search for a facility to suit your teaching needs.

Course Management Tools
Course management and development software tools are available for online course syllabi, discussions, and grade books. You can also setup a mailing list for your class. For more information, refer to the OWL-Space web site (http://owlspace.rice.edu/) or email edtech@rice.edu.

New to Rice? Once information about you is complete in the Human Resources' employee database, you can learn your assigned "NetID" and set your "NetID password," which are your identification name and password for several campus computing systems. Go to https://apply.rice.edu/ to learn your preset NetID and create your password. For information on accounts available to you from IT see the web page listed above. Other computing resources may be available to you via your department or research group.

Email – http://www.rice.edu/it/email/

You can access your email account using a variety of software programs or with a web-based email program. Tools are also available for setting "away from my email" messages. For more information on specific email software, configuring, or mail quotas, visit the above link or contact the Help Desk.

Research Computing – http://www.rice.edu/it/research/

IT provides system administration and application support for the research needs. Please contact us prior to purchasing any computational research equipment that may require any type of IT support.

Computing and Data Security
Protect your computer against malware (viruses, Spam, spyware) as well as obtain information on backups and identity theft.

Campus Network – http://www.rice.edu/it/network/

Connecting
IT maintains the Rice network and provides access from offices, classrooms, and labs (via ethernet ports), in campus wireless zones, and off-campus via dial-up service. (Individuals can contract with a broadband service provider for home access as well.) IT also maintains the Rice network connections to the Internet.

Security Tools
The following resources can help you securely access Rice resources via dial-up or an Internet service provider: proxy server, VPN (virtual private network), and SSH.

IT offers live event support to the Rice community. Many of these services require extensive setup and require advance scheduling: lecture and event recording, field recording, streaming Internet, online media delivery, and videoconferencing. (Support for some events may be fee-based). To set up an event or learn more, email avevents@rice.edu

Computing equipment for faculty and staff is supplied, in most cases, by their departments. This web site has information about discounts and vendors along with purchase recommendations for departmental and personal purchases. Additional information is available from the Help Desk.

Telecommunications – http://www.rice.edu/telephone/

Telephone service including voicemail is provided to departments and college residents. To report problems contact the Telecommunications Office at x5555.

Web Services – http://webservices.rice.edu/

Web Services advises Rice research groups, and departments on web sites. This group can help from concept to graphics, information presentations, and data driven web applications. (Some services are fee-based.)
