Common Questions from New Students (and Parents)
-
Am I required to bring a computer?
No. You will have access to campus computing resources including labs.
-
What kind of computer should I bring (or buy)?
It's your choice, but it should meet some minimum standards. For recommendations and purchasing discounts, go to Technology Marketplace.
-
Can I use my Rice email before I arrive?
Yes, your Rice email is available for use as soon as you set your NetID password.
-
What happens when I have a computing problem?
If you reside in the colleges, you'll have Student Computing Consultants to help you when you arrive. For advice or assistance before you arrive, contact the Help Desk. While you are a student at Rice, you can use the Help Desk for computing assistance.
-
Do I need to bring a phone for my room?
Each college room/suite has an operational telephone line. Since there is only one phone jack connection per room, coordinate with your roommate about bringing a phone. Also, see the Campus Telephone Services web page.
