If you have a different computer or operating system, please check for another document for your computer and operating system.

How to Get a Rice-Level 3 Dialup Account

Rice-Level 3 Dialup accounts are available to all current Rice University faculty, staff and students. To apply for a Rice-Level 3 Dialup account, use a web browser to visit

http://apply.rice.edu/

and follow the Account Application link to apply for an account. If you do not have a NetID or LOLA (Local Owl-Linked) password, you will be prompted to create a password when you apply for the Rice-Level 3 Dialup account. If you already have a NetID or LOLA password, you will use that password for your dialup connection.

What Phone Number Do I Use?

Rice-Level 3 offers local dialup numbers throughout the continental US. To find the number for your area, visit the Apply web site:

http://apply.rice.edu/

and log in with your NetID or LOLA password, then go to Account Maintenance, Dialup Phonebook. This page will allow you to search Level 3 local phone numbers by state. If you plan to travel and use Rice-Level 3 local dialup, you should print out the numbers for your destination to simplify the connection process.

At this time, the following phone numbers are used in the Houston metro area. However, these numbers may change. Please consult the Apply web site for the latest phone numbers.

First Time Setup for MacOS 10.3

To connect with your Rice-Level 3 Dialup account, you need to set up a connection on your computer. If your Mac is already set-up for the old Rice modem pool, please read the extra notes in step 5.

(1) Open the Apple menu, System Preferences:

(2) Open the Network preference panel by double-clicking the icon:

(3) Select Internal Modem from the Show menu:

(4) Click the PPP button. Enter a descriptive name in the Service Provider field, such as Rice-Level 3 Dialup.

Enter your Rice username into the Account Name field. For most members of the Rice community, the username is the part that goes before the @ in your e-mail address. For example, if your Rice e-mail address is hello@rice.edu, your username is just hello.

Enter your NetID or LOLA password into the Password field. The password is case sensitive; please enter it exactly as you created it.

Enter a Level 3 dialup number for your location into the Telephone Number field. You can find a list of Houston area numbers at the top of this document, or consult the Apply web site (http://apply.rice.edu/) for the current authoritative list.

(5) If you are setting up your dialup settings for the first time, please skip to the next step (6). If you are replacing your old Rice modem pool settings with new Rice-Level 3 Dialup settings, please continue with this step.

Click the PPP Options button. In the Advanced Options section, pull down the Terminal Script menu and select None. Uncheck the box Connect using a terminal window (command line). Click OK to save the PPP Options.

(6) On the main PPP window, click Apply Now to save your settings. Click Dial Now to show a connection summary, then click Connect to immediately test the connection.

(7) Your modem will dial the Level 3 number and connect. If all goes well, you will see a connection status window indicating that you are Connected. When finished, press the Disconnect button to hang up the phone, then close the System Preferences panel.

Connect to or Disconnect from Rice-Level 3 Dialup

Now that your connection has been created and saved, you can connect in two easy ways.

You may connect using the telephone icon in the upper-right portion of the menu bar; select Connect from the pull down menu:

Or, you can open the Internet Connect application, in your Applications folder:

For easier access, you can drag the Internet Connect icon on to your dock. Launch it directly from the dock by clicking it once.

Changing the Phone Number

When you move or travel, you may need to change the phone number for your Rice-Level 3 Dialup connection. Before you leave for your travel or move the computer, check the Dialup Phonebook on the Apply web site:

http://apply.rice.edu/

You can search for local phone numbers by state. It would be a good idea to print out a copy of the local phone numbers for your destinations, so you will have them on hand.

When you are ready to change the phone number, open System Preferences, Network. Select Internal Modem from the Show menu. Enter the new number into the Telephone Number field.

If you need to frequently switch between commonly used numbers, you can use the Location menu at the top of the Network panel to set up different locations for each place that you use your computer. Any network settings that you specify will be attached to the location you have selected from the Location menu.
