Rice-Level 3 Dialup Service
Dialup service (previously known as modem access) is a service offered by Information Technology (IT) for Rice faculty, staff, and students who live, work, or travel off-campus and need access to the Internet to complete their day-to-day responsibilities.
Dialup accounts are automatically generated for all Rice IDs.
Configuring Your Computer
Rice-Level 3 Dialup can be used on a variety of operating systems. For information on how to configure Dialup for your computer please visit the IT Tutorials Dialup page.
Phone Numbers
Level 3 dialup provides local access phone numbers in Houston, Houston suburbs and many cities and towns throughout the United States. To find numbers for your local area, visit http://apply.rice.edu, then click on Account Maintenance, Dialup Phonebook. You can search for local phone numbers by state.
Accessing Restricted Data
In order to secure the campus network against outside security problems, clients of the Rice dialup service will no longer be directly connected to Rice. Instead, they will be connected to the general Internet. For material in the library collections, dialup clients will use either the Proxy or VPN systems to access these restricted materials.
Disconnect When Finished
Because Rice purchases the dialup service from Level 3 on a per-minute basis, IT encourages customers who have completed their Internet activities to disconnect promptly. As long as the connection is open, the charge to Rice continues.
