Internet Access or Rice Network Access ?
Rice faculty, staff and students all have different needs and requirements for Internet and Rice network access from non-Rice locations. Information Technology (IT) provides several connection alternatives for Internet and Rice network access; non-Rice providers are also an option.
The first step is to identify the type of access required. If you research information on various Internet sites, the fastest connections are provided by broadband (cable companies like Roadrunner, or major phone service providers like SBC). For travelers, most hotel chains now offer Internet access in each guest room. Internet cafes are also an option for access to the web. Another alternative for Internet Access is Rice Level 3 dialup, where digital signals are converted to audible sounds for transmission through a home phone line. IT has selected Level 3 to provide low-cost dialup service to Rice students, faculty, and staff who use this type of service.
Broadband service, hotels, internet cafes and dialup service can all be used to access various sites on the Internet, including Rice's public pages such as Web Mail and Web Calendar. Rice students, faculty, and staff can read and send e-mail messages and review and edit their Oracle Calendar events through these sites.
For Rice employees or students who need information stored in a secure Rice server, access is limited to customers who are on the Rice network, or have the appearance of being on the Rice network. For travelers and other off-campus customers, VPN (Virtual Private Network) provides a shell or tunnel that is recognized by the secure Rice servers as belonging to someone on the Rice network. This tunnel allows the off-campus customer to review and edit their secure files as if they were sitting in their campus office, room, or lab. VPN accounts are not the same as Level 3 or other dialup accounts and must be applied for separately.
