Remote Access through the Dynamic Proxy Server

Once Internet access has been obtained (see the Internet access page for details), Rice faculty, staff, and students may want to read or research databases, journals, and other publications that are typically limited to subscribers or members. The Fondren Library provides an online reading service for over 125 publications, which allows Rice affiliates to review these publications.

Initially, the online Reading service was available only to customers on Rice computers. Today, customers who are not using campus computers may still read the online journals through the dynamic Proxy server. The Proxy server can only be utilized with a properly configured web browser. See the compatible browser list at http://proxy.rice.edu/setup.php.

Do I need a Proxy account?

No. There is no such thing as a Proxy account. In order to use the Proxy server, you will need a web browser that supports automatic proxy configuration via a script. Your existing e-mail account (Owlnet, RUF, IS, sparta, bioc, cs, math, ECE, MEMS, CAAM, or stat) is the only account you need to log on from campus computers.
