What is NetID?

NetID is a unique login credential for each Rice student, faculty, or staff member. New Rice employees and students receive a NetID even before they arrive on campus, which means they can forward email to their Rice account and take other steps to ensure a smooth transition.

The division of Information Technology (IT) has implemented NetID use for all public applications on IT servers. This includes logging in to Rice computers in the classrooms and labs, email and personal calendars, and connecting to the Rice network through dialup or Virtual Private Network (VPN). The division of Information Technology (IT) worked with departments to synchronize their computer applications so that NetID can be used to login to local systems as well.

NetID and Email Addresses

In the past, every Rice community member was required to create and then use their NetID (user name) as part of their email address upon arrival at Rice. In the apply system, the NetID and an institutional email address are created for new community members from information in the Banner system. Rice members may need or wish to use an email address that is different from what the apply system creates. The application process provides the opportunity for Rice faculty, staff and students to select up to three vanity or alias email addresses. For example, when Professor John L. Doe, III arrives at Rice, his assigned NetID might be "jld7". He will use the NetID along with his password to authenticated to his email server or login to his desktop computer and it is only seen and used by him.

The assigned institutional email address would be created as John.L.Doe@rice.edu.

Vanity or Alias Email Addresses

In the example of John.L.Doe, known to everyone as "Larry," he can create a different vanity (also known as alias) email address if it is not already selected by another Rice community member. If Larry@rice.edu is not already in use, he can request this for one of his vanity email addresses.. Rice community members get to choose up to 3 email aliases. Once an email alias is chosen, it endures for the person's entire Rice relationship and not be changed. If Larry had been a student at Rice and selected three alises of wiseguy@rice.edu, stoned@rice.edu, and gonefishing@rice.edu during his undergraduate years, those selections remain his only vanity address options if he returns to Rice in later years as an administrator or professor.

Want to create a vanity email address for yourself? Visit https://apply.rice.edu (remember you have to have set up your NetID password first). Look in the bright yellow box for the words "Create a vanity mail alias" and select that link.
