Storage for My Stuff
All your personal files can now be stored in the space allocated to your Rice NetID account in the new network. Some customers call this personal storage space their "home directory." In addition to increased space (up from 100 MB in the old Owlnet system), the new enterprise class storage area is backed up automatically several times each day.
Storage Space
As soon as your NetID is established, you are automatically assigned a specific amount of electronic storage space.
For individuals:
- 1 GB for undergraduate students
- 2 GB for graduate students
- 3 GB for faculty and staff members
For Rice colleges, departments, centers, and institutes
- 20 GB shared space for entire department
- Centers
- Institutes
FAQs for storage space
- How do I get more? Rice faculty and staff, if you are using the IT Self-Service page, click on the "Request More Storage" button. Note: student storage quotas are assigned for the duration of their student status and cannot be increased.
- How much does it cost? For individuals and departments alike, there is no charge for the initial amount of electronic storage space assigned to your NetID or your group. Rice faculty and staff can request additional storage without incurring any expense, however excessive requests for additional storage may be subject to review prior to approval. For departments, additional electronic storage space can be purchased in GB increments (see table of expenses and service levels).
- How do I start using storage? Individuals begin using their electronic storage space by mapping a drive (see links below). Once the drive is mapped on your computer, you can save and copy files to your electronic storage location just as you save or copy files to any other drive in your computer. Departments that have not yet utilized their shared storage space can contact the Help Desk or your assigned IT support staff member to request initial shared storage set up.
Map a drive for your storage space
To begin utilizing your storage space, simply map a drive on your computer to the storage location. In the past, undergraduates have selected their U: drive for their personal account storage mapping. Whenever you are logged into a Rice computer, you can save your files and images to a folder in this drive. Additional instructions on mapping or mounting drives and sharing subfolders can be found in the IT Tutorials wiki:
- Map or mount your storage drive on a PC
- Map or mount your storage drive on a Macintosh
- Map or mount your storage drive from outside Rice
- Share a subfolder - directions for a PC

- Lost a file? - Get help through the IT Help Desk (x4357).
Subversion
Subversion is a free/open-source version control system. That is, Subversion manages files and directories, and the changes made to them, over time. This allows you to recover older versions of your data, or examine the history of how your data changed. In this regard, many people think of a version control system as a sort of "time machine".
