Rice Wireless Network Project Technical Q & A

The following are a few common questions and answers concerning wireless technical issues.

Will the wireless network replace the wired network?

The wireless network is an overlay to the existing wired network; the wireless network is a flexible extension of our wired network. The existing wired network will continue to be improved, expanded and supported by Information Technology.

Can faculty install their own wireless networks?

As stated in the Wireless Network Policy, Information Technology will work with faculty to determine whether there are circumstances under which use of the wireless device may be accommodated without causing interference to the Rice wireless users.

What hardware is required to access the wireless network?

All wireless devices should support 802.11 b and 802.11g.

Will the University supply wireless network cards and devices?

The end users are responsible for providing their own equipment.

How secure is the wireless network?

The wireless system requires a valid Rice computing account and password, as well as device specific authentication. Our goal is to provide the same level of security offered on the wired network.
