Antivirus Software: Trend Micro Internet Security (PC-Cillin)
In 2006, Rice University purchased the Trend Micro Internet Security (PC-Cillin) suite for PC computers running Windows. This product replaces McAfee VirusScan for use on personal and/or home computers that are not administrated by Information Technology.
PC-Cillin is for use on personal computers only!
Rice-owned computers connected to the Rice network will use Trend Micro Officescan, a managed enterprise product. Do not install PC-Cillin on such computers.
Current Rice faculty, staff, students and professors emeritus are eligible for PC-Cillin.
- If you are already running PC-Cillin 2006 and simply need a new key, please click on the link below to get a new key
- If you have other antivirus software or PC-cillin 2006 and you wish to upgrade to PC-Cillin 2007, please make sure you read through the directions below and completely remove the old software before you attempt the installation.
- If you experience any problems while installing PC-Cillin 2007, please look into the folders under
C:\Program Files\Trend Microfor a tool calledPCCTool.exe. Running this tool will resolve problems with the installation in most cases. Please call the Help Desk xHELP, or visit http://helpdesk.rice.edu if you need more help.
To install PC-Cillin on your personal computer, please use the following instructions.
(1) Get your Rice PC-Cillin 2006 and 2007 License Key
Use your web browser to visit
Fill out the form, and a Rice-specific license key will be e-mailed to your Rice e-mail account. Keep this key handy as you complete the remaining steps. Please do not share this key with anyone. Only current faculty, staff, students and professors emeritus are eligible for a license key.
Note: The PC-Cillin 2006 version and its key will be valid till the end of 2007.
(2) Get the PC-Cillin 2007 Installer
Use your web browser to connect to the following site:
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/product.asp?productid=32
Click the link Trend Micro Internet Security [PC-Cillin] 2007 (for
US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand...) and save the file to
your Windows desktop when prompted.
Don't run the PC-Cillin 2007 installer yet! Just save it on your desktop and you'll run it later.
(3) Disconnect from the network
Physically disconnect your computer from the network, by removing
the network cable, turning off the wireless adapter or hanging up the
dial-up connection.
(4) Remove Existing Antivirus Software
For correct installation, you need to remove any existing antivirus software that might be on your computer. If you are currently using Rice's previous antivirus product, McAfee VirusScan, please visit our page of instructions for removing VirusScan.
If you are using a different antivirus product, you must follow the manufacturer's instructions for removing the product. Generally, you will use the Add/Remove Programs control panel (in Start, Control Panel or Start, Settings, Control Panel) to remove software.
(5) Install PC-Cillin 2007
Double-click the Trend Micro Internet Security (PC-Cillin) installer on your computer desktop:
- During the install, you will be prompted for the PC-Cillin 2007 license code. Enter the code that you received via e-mail in step 2.
- If you have the Windows Firewall turned on, you will also be prompted to turn it off. Please accede to this request.
(6) Re-connect to the network
Re-connect your computer the network via the network cable,
wireless, or dial-up connection as you usually connect to the Internet.
Right-click the PC-Cillin "blue pill" icon in the task bar, and select Update Now. You will also be
prompted to register the product with Trend Micro.
