Travel and Working Off-Campus

Take it with You

If you plan to travel or work off-campus with a Rice laptop computer, you just need an Internet connection and VPN installed on your laptop. When you arrive at your destination, connect your portable computer to the Internet and login to VPN. All your pre-mapped Rice drives should be available once you've accessed the Rice network through VPN.

Can't Take it with You?

If you do not have access to a portable computer, you can still access files and data from a non-Rice computer if you can install VPN and connect to the Internet. Begin by downloading VPN, then login to the Rice network through VPN and remote control your desktop computer back at Rice.

It won't matter if your local computer doesn't all the have the applications you use in your Rice classroom or office because remote controlling your computer is like working with really long arms and excellent distance vision. Even though you may be sitting a few blocks or a few thousand miles away, you can still work on and save your data as if you are sitting in front of your Rice computer.

Remote Messages

Even if you don't have VPN, you can still check your Rice email and calendar from any computer with an Internet connection:

Voicemail

Set yourself a vacation message or another temporary greeting and check voice mail messages on your Rice phone even if you are off-campus. Call 713-348-2000 and follow the instructions to access your Rice voicemail box.
