Identity Management at Rice University

In February 2006, the IT Advisory Committee (ITAC) endorsed the concept of Identity Management at Rice University. A committee of university representatives was formed with the purpose of guiding the evolution of an IT Policy on Rice's Identity Management.

The Identity Management (IdM) Committee continues to meet to learn and discuss the electronic credentials which govern IdM in an institution of higher education. Then the committee provides guidance on the formation of a policy that is possible to implement at Rice and that accounts for the majority of the Rice population.

Identity Management is the set of standards, procedures and technologies that provide, distribute, link and maintain electronic credentials to individuals and maintain authoritative information about the holders of those credentials.

IdM committee members represent groups that are involved with some aspect of identity management for the campus, or represent a constituent group that may require a presence or input during the formation of new identity management policies.

IdM committee members provide input in the drafting of such policies and IT will provide information regarding the needs of the policies, background, peer analysis and drafting the actual documents.

After the initial committee meetings, members share input and guidance based on the needs of their constituents.  Email discussion of particular topics are used to speed things along; anyone abstaining from the conversations is considered to have no dissenting opinions.

To participate on the committee or for more information on IdM, contact Barry Ribbeck, Directory for Systems, Architecture, and Infrastructure in IT, at extension 4012.
