Operating System Updates for the Macintosh
Staff members in the Division of Information Technology (IT) regularly monitor system issues concerning Macintosh computers. You can subscribe to the rice-osx mailing list for notices by IT staff of interest to Mac OS X users by completing the web form at: https://mailman.rice.edu/mailman/listinfo/rice-osx. Descriptions of the Mac Mailing Lists can be found at: http://www.rice.edu/it/email/email.html. Macintosh computers that are maintained by IT staff will receive system and software updates as needed.
Members of the Rice community who maintain their own Macintosh computers should regularly check for operating system upgrades. Although Macintosh computers are rarely the target of virus and worm attacks, it is prudent to protect your computer from an off-campus attacker. We recommend that you enable the "Check for Updates" option and set it to a minimum of one week. This is especially important for any 'Security' updates. Updates to Mac OS X and Apple applications can be performed via the Software Update pane of System Preferences, which you can access from the Apple menu in Mac OS X.
