Details on what internship programs will be offered and the VPIT Internship Application form will be available by January 15. The deadline for submitting the application is March 1. You will need an official transcript and at least one letter of recommendation from an employer or other supervisor who can describe your experience and work ethic.
IT Internship Program
Intern in the Office of the Vice Provost for Information Technology (IT) and build out your resume with experience in this dynamic computing organization, known to provide opportunities for people to innovate, create, develop, and be challenged.
Choose the Internship or another student job in IT! Each summer, IT utilizes over 20 students in positions in every department of the IT division. Regular student worker positions are posted on the Financial Aid web site.
You will get hands-on experience in areas such as:

- Web Site Design and Management
- Marketing and Communications
- Customer Support and Service

We were recently recognized as a Campus Technology Innovator for the completion of a major infrastructure upgrade that included the entire campus network, a new data center, enterprise storage, Cisco clean access, and virtual servers. IT staff are regularly asked to present at national conferences and are published in higher education computing venues. The IT Internship program is offered through the Office of the Vice Provost for Information Technology at Rice University.

Graphics Intern
Marketing and Communications Intern
Web Site Design and Management Intern
Work with staff members in IT’s Marketing and Communications team or with the Web Services team. Projects range from web site customer support and service to the development of marketing materials for a variety of audiences. Create and maintain web pages, wikis, technical how-to web tutorials, and more. Graphics and marketing internships also provide support for campus IT projects and these interns will create, print, and place posters around campus, arrange events, create and distribute fliers, manager custom mailing lists for each project, and develop effective tools for reaching both undergraduate and graduate student audiences. Web interns will work with customers and staff to develop, enhance, and maintain a wide variety of web sites. Applicants should be familiar with HTML, CSS, Adobe Photoshop, and Dreamweaver or other web content management tools.
Security and Networking Analyst Intern
Work with the Information Security Officer to implement network security policies and procedures on network devices, remote access devices, firewalls, servers, and desktops. Provide technical support for security analysis, intrusion detection, incident response, and network security management.
Project Management Intern
Work with IT Management in the implementation of campus IT projects. Tasks will include developing requirements and proposals, project management, and team supervision. Interns will work in multiple areas throughout IT.

Expert Speaker Series
Interns meet with guest speakers to gain insight on the speakers’ various areas of expertise. Previous topics have included Managing People, Managing Time and Team Resources, Building Customer Relationships, Effective Web Surveys, Show and Tell - Using Site Visits to Communicate your Message, Women in IT, Career Strategies, Growing your Staff, Tips for your First Job, Using the AP Style Guide for Written Communications, and Web Site Accessibility.

Additional Opportunities
In addition to their individual tasks, interns will participate in group meetings and discussions with other IT staff and interns. Opportunities to learn and improve office communication and collaboration skills will be provided, and department supervisors will give mid-term and final employee reviews modeled after the performance reviews conducted with permanent IT staff members each year. Interns will give a final 10-minute oral presentation using Powerpoint or other visuals to IT directors and managers at the end of their internship.
Requirements
Applicants should have an interest in applying technology in higher education. Preference will be given to students who are enrolled in disciplines related to information security, networking, graphic communications, and leadership/project management. Interns should be eligible to work in the U.S. without a visa sponsorship.
Summer Internships (12 weeks)
Applicants for the summer internships must be registered at an institution of higher learning.
Twelve Month Internships
Preference will be given to senior students who are enrolled in or have recently graduated with a degree in Engineering or Computer Science.
