Procedure for Campus Installations

Rice has a Mathematica site license for faculty, staff, and students to use on Rice-owned machines only. Faculty, staff, and students must ask their division team consultants to install Mathematica. Faculty and staff, but not students, may also install the software on their home machines, provided they use it for research or teaching only (see below). The license is restricted to individuals who meet the following definition: Must be Rice University academic staff or at least half-time Rice University faculty, staff or students. Individuals from other institutions and non-academic staff are excluded from the license agreement.

The software can be installed on the following platforms:

Procedure for Home-Use Distribution

Rice University may distribute Mathematica to faculty or staff members for installation on personal home machines. This privilege is extended exclusively to Rice-affiliated individuals who are considered faculty or staff members.

Wolfram requires the following procedure for distribution of Mathematica home-use licenses:

  1. To facilitate the process for requesting these licenses, Wolfram Research has created a Home-Use License Request Form, which is available online at: http://www.wolfram.com/solutions/highered/homeuse.cgi (Faculty and staff can also use this form to request an upgrade or renewal for an existing faculty/staff home-use license.)
  2. When a request is received, Wolfram Research will verify that the applicant is a current faculty/staff member of Rice University.
  3. Each individual approved for a home-use license is issued a unique license number and sent a CD-ROM containing a single-machine version of Mathematica for the platform requested.
  4. Each home-use license expires annually in conjunction with our campus license. Upgrades are free as they are released, but each home-use license holder must request them from Wolfram Research by filling out this form. Certain restrictions of use apply (see section above) on home-use license.

Questions on Home-Use Access

Can students have copies of the media for use in their dorm rooms or places of residence?

No. Copies of Mathematica cannot be distributed to graduate or undergraduate students for use on their personal machines, even if they are located in a university residence hall. Students can use Mathematica in Owlnet labs located throughout campus. If a student would like to use Mathematica on their home computer discounted licenses can be purchased on the Wolfram web site.

Is faculty and staff home-use access automatically included with our license agreement?

Yes. Faculty and staff access is automatically included in Rice's campus agreement. This allows all faculty and staff members to request home-use copies of Mathematica to install on a single machine located at their personal residence (see the Home-Use section above for details).

Can faculty or staff use the campus license program media on their home machines?

No. Copies of the Mathematica license program media that is used for campus installations may not be distributed to faculty or staff for use on their personal computers. Instead, faculty/staff are eligible to receive their own home-use license. The Home-Use Distribution Procedure section above outlines the standard procedure to request and distribute faculty/staff home-use Mathematica licenses.
