Statistical Software (SAS and SPSS)

Information Technology has a pool of licenses available for statistical software products. Each of these products can be acquired during business hours through Manager of Procurement & Vendor Relations Charlita Marrs (charlita@rice.edu). Individuals purchasing with a check will pay State of Texas Sales & Use tax. Alternatively, software may be purchased with an IDT (Interdepartmental Transfer).

Student Options for Individual Licenses

HOME USE OPTIONS FOR STUDENTS

The Student version is a limited version of the SPSS Base program (limited to 1500 cases and 50 variables) and is designed for students who need to take a single course. It is not upgradeable and will generally expire after about 13 months. The costs vary but it is usually available for $90-$110. This can be purchased through Prentice Hall at: http://vig.prenhall.com/home

The Graduate Pack consists of the full working version of the SPSS Base, Advanced Models, and Regression Models modules (and Amos on the Windows platform) and is upgradeable. You also have the option of making the software more professional after you are done with your studies so that you can use it in your career and begin to receive technical support. The costs range from $190-$210. The software can be purchased only from university bookstores or online at JourneyEd: http://www.journeyed.com

Both versions are limited to installation help only from SPSS technical support line.

And finally, there is one last option that provides the opportunity to lease the full working version of the SPSS Base only or the SPSS The Graduate Pack. Both lease options are offered for 6 or 12 months through the eStore: http://www.e-academy.com

All of these options are for student home use only and proof of student status is required for purchase.

SAS

SAS License Period

SAS licenses follow the Rice fiscal year of July 1 through June 30; however, the terms of the SAS license allow work to continue for 90 days after the expiration date. The current period runs from July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2008. The current versions are 9.1.3 for Windows OS and 6.1.2 for Mac OS X.

SAS License Cost

If your current SAS license has expired and you want to continue using SAS, you must renew your license. The fee for this license period (7/1/2007-6/30/2008) is $115.00 by check or $100.00 by Interdepartmental Transfer (IDT).
No pro-rated annual fees exist for SAS software licenses.

SAS Installation

Purchasers of new and renewal licenses need to submit a request at helpdesk@rice.edu for installation of the software, stating that you have paid for the license. Be sure to include your building, room number, and your contact information. A divisional representative should contact you within 24 hours.

SAS Home Use

Faculty and staff may purchase a personal license for either office or home use or both. These licenses should be used for academic related applications only.

Students may use SAS that is installed on Rice owned computers ONLY.

SPSS

SPSS License Period

SPSS license period runs from June 1st through May 31st; however, the terms of the SPSS license allow work to continue for 60 days after the expiration date. The current network versions are 15.0 for Windows OS and 13.0 for Mac OS X.

SPSS License Cost

Individual SPSS licenses are available for Windows ONLY. If your current SPSS license has expired and you want to continue using SPSS, you must renew your license. The fee for this license period (06/01/07-05/31/08) is $165.00 by check or $150.00 by Interdepartmental Transfer (IDT).

No pro-rated annual fees exist for SPSS software licenses.
