Nanoshells
To download a 300 dpi TIFF file of either of the following photos, simply click on the appropriate image.
Above: Nanoshells are extremely small particles that catch light waves within targeted frequency ranges and scatter or absorb them. By changing the ratio of the shell to the core, researchers can tailor their optical properties.
Above: Metal nanoshells are tiny particles, ranging from about 50 to 1,000 nanometers in diameter, with an insulating core, such as silica, coated by a thin shell of conductive metal. The above microscopic image shows the growth process of the metal coating on a nanoshell.
Dolomite surface
Images of a dolomite surface exposed to dilute acid at room temperature. The surface topography was measured with vertical scanning interferometry. The plateau seen in the images is a relic of the original mineral surface, protected during dissolution by a mask applied to the surface prior to reaction.
