CHIN   101 INTRODUCTION TO CHINESE  LANGUAGE & CULT Credits 5.00  Fall 99
           * DISTRIBUTION GROUP I (second semester must be completed)
For students with no background in Chinese. Emphasis is on listening and
speaking, including giving short speeches. Introduction to the Pinyin
writing system and to basic grammatical structures. Students will learn
to write 100 Chinese characters, and will be introduced to elements of
Chinese culture through the language.

CHIN   201 INTRODUCTION TO CHINESE LANGUAGE & CULTU Credits 5.00  Fall 99
           * DISTRIBUTION GROUP I (second semester must be completed)
Students will write short essays in both Pinyin and Chinese characters,
and make speeches in class. 100 new characters will be introduced.
Instruction mostly in Chinese. Prere- CHIN 102 or permission of
instructor.

CHIN   203 ACCELERATED CHINESE  LANGUAGE & CULTURE  Credits 4.00  Fall 99
           * DISTRIBUTION COURSE: GROUP I
For students with some minimal competence in spoken Chinese.  Emphasis
will be on oral skills and writing.  Students will learn to read 400
characters and write 200 characters. Supplementary reading materials
such as restaurant menus, lyrics of popular songs are also included.
Prereq- some minimal competence in spoken Chinese

CHIN   301 INTERMEDIATE CHINESE LANGUAGE & CULTURE  Credits 4.00  Fall 99
           * DISTRIBUTION COURSE: GROUP I
Continuation of Chinese 202. Students will continue to make oral
presentations in class,  in addition to gaining further reading
practice. At the end of the course, student should have familiarity with
about 600 Chinese characters, be familiar with use of Chinese
dictionaries, and be able to write short compsitions using Chinese
characters.

CHIN   311 INTERMEDIATE ACCELERATED  CHINESE LANG & Credits 4.00  Fall 99
           * DISTRIBUTION COURSE: GROUP I
Emphasis on reading and writing skits. Supplementary reading materials
such as advertisements, and lyrics to songs are included.
Prereq- CHIN 204 or ability to write 400 Chinese characters.

CHIN   335 INTRODUCTION TO CLASSICAL CHINESE NOVELS Credits 3.00  Fall 99
This course will examine the basic characteristics of classical Chinese
novels, primarily through reference to five important works created
during the 16th-18th centuries, namely:  the WATER MARGIN, the MONKEY,
the GOLDEN LOTUS, the SCHOLARS, and the DREAM OF THE RED CHAMBER.
During the term, we will also consider issues in comparative narratology
and their application to the Chinese case.  All readings are in English
translation.  No previous knowledge of Chinese literature or the Chinese
language is required.

Prereq- CHIN 312 or ability to write 750 Chinese characters.
