An exploration of diversity, strengths and deficiencies in the current
education system in action, conducted through readings, case studies,
and observation in the local schools. Students will develop and present
their own original case studies

Using an interdisciplinary approach, Educ 201 looks at American schools
as products of political, economic and social conditions in different
historical periods, including our own. Students will be expected to
develop an awareness of contemporary curriculum theory and practice
through first hand experience with materials and the schools.

Analyses of schools as social institutions.  Contemporary sociological
perspectives on the role of schools in society.  Status-attainment and
allocation models will provide frameworks for understanding relations
between social-class origin, school achievement, and socioeconomic
attainment.  Enrollment limited to 25.

Teaching beginning Algebra with an emphasis on mathematical models and
representations, variables and functions, and symbolic reasoning rather
than symbolic manipulation.  Foundation concepts for secondary
mathematics, albegraic thinking and symbolic reasoning, function
concepts, relationship between equations and functions, tools for
albebraic thinking, relationship between algebra and geometry, and
underlying mathematical processes.  Use of manipulatives and technology.

Field-based ethnographic research on teaching and learning.  In seminar
and independent research projects, students will learn ethnographic
research methods and conduct directed case studies.  Open to
upperclassmen and graduate students, particularly those in education,
sociology, anthropology, and psychology.
Prereq- consent of instructor.
Enrollment is limited to 15.
