sciences.  Focus on communicative competence, cultural awareness,
and engineering/science-related content.  Multimedia integration.
Prereq- Germ 113 or Germ 101 or consent of instructor.

Course emphasizes the functional use of German through a variety of
texts and audiovisual materials.

A study of East-German writers before and after the "Wende". Authors
will include Hermann Kant, Christa Wolf, Monika Maron, Volker Braun and
others.  Readings and discussions in German.

           * DISTRIBUTION COURSE: GROUP I
Since the sixties Germany build a very distinct auteur cinema with
independent filmmakers such as Fassbinder, Herzog, Wenders, Adlon,
Sander, Brueckner, Trotta and others.  Film critical readings and class
discussions will be in English.  All films will subtitled in English.
German majors may read and write in German.

GERM   391 THE TEXT OF OPERA                        Credits 3.00  Fall 99
           * DISTRIBUTION COURSE: GROUP I
The course will focus on the interplay between German literary texts and
opera, by exploring the adaptation of texts to opera libretti and the
use of opera in German literature.  Texts considered will include works
from Schiller, Goethe, Buchner, Wagner, Hofmannsthal and Mann.  Operas
will include works by Verdi, Massenet, Gounod, Berg, Wagner and
Strauss.
