GMAN   321 THE LITERATURE OF EXILE IN THE 20TH CENT Credits 3.00  Fall 99
           * DISTRIBUTION COURSE: GROUP I
Exile as the expulsion from one's native society, cultural traditions,
and language has engendered a distinct and variegated literature in this
century.  With a focus on the playwright Bertolt Brecht and the novelist
Thomas Mann, this course will also discuss a representative selection of
works by such diverse writers as Vladimir Nabokov, Jorge Semprun,
Milan Kundera, Joseph Brodsky and others.
Also offered as HUMA 370.

GMAN   391 NEW GERMAN CINEMA                        Credits 3.00  Fall 99
           * DISTRIBUTION COURSE: GROUP I
Since the sixties Germany build a very distinct auteur cinema with
independent filmmakers such as Fassbinder, Herzog, Wenders, Adlon,
Sander, Brueckner, Trotta and others.  Film critical readings and class
discussions will be in English.  All films will be subtitled in English.
German majors may read and write in German.
