Introduction to the study of the Spanish language with emphasis on the
development of audio-lingual skills.
This course is an innovative, technology-enriched class with extensive
use of computer, video, and the Internet to enhance audio-lingual
skills.  Credits: 5.
Prereq- Placement or permission of the coordinator. Enrollment is
limited to 20 for all 101 sections.

Commercial organizations and business in Spanish-speaking countries,
business and legal correspondence, and techniques in legal and
commercial transactions.  Course will be of special interest to those
students planning to take the Madrid Chamber of Commerce and Industry
Examination in Commercial Spanish and/or to those interested in applying
for internships in Spanish-speaking countries.
Prereq- Second-year competency or permission of instructor.

SPAN   307 THE LANGUAGE & CULTURE OF  MEDICINE AND  Credits 3.00  Fall 99
An exploration of the differences between Anglo-American and
Latin-American languages and cultures of medicine.  This course will
navigate the treacherous socioeconomic and cultural rift between
high-tech Anglo-American medical institutions and rural Latin-American
conceptions of the role of doctors, medicine, and health care.  Through
live and taped interviews and presentations made by health care
providers and patients, students will gain first-hand knowledge of the
varieties of Spanish and of the problems posed by norms and protocols,
customs and courtesy, to the medical translator, interpreter or health
care provider.  Of special interest to students interested in
Latin-American culture and those wishing to pursue careers in the health
professions, medical translation or interpretation.
Prereq- Four semesters of Spanish or equivalent proficiency, or
permission of instructor.
Enrollment limited to 25.

The main emphasis of this course is on the adquisition of vocabulary and
intensive practice in spoken and written Spanish through a variety of
media.  Review of phonology, morphology and syntax, as well as a
comparison of "standard" Spanish to Chilean variations.  Offered only as
part of the Fall Semester Chile Program.

Exploration of the ways in which women writers in 14th-17th centuries
have developed their literary works (prose, poetry and drama). Emphasis
on historical, religious and political contexts. Readings will include
Hispanic & Latin American texts of Leonor Lopez de Cordoba, Sor Teresa
de Cartagena, Sor Isabel de Villena (15th c.), Santa Teresa de Jesus,
Beatriz Bernal (16th c.), Maria de Zayas, and Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz

           * DISTRIBUTION COURSE: GROUP I
Study of the theory and practice of major contemporary Latin American
dramatists, and their place in the broader context of world theatre.
Students will attend several plays during the semester.  Dramatists
studied include: Emilio Carballido, Rene Marques, Jorge Diaz, Egon
Wolff, Osvaldo Dragun, Griselda Gambaro, Manuel Puig and Mario Vargas
Llosa, among others.  Section 1 offered only as part of Fall Semester
in Chile Program.
Section 2 course:THE MODERN MEXICAN NOVEL  Description: The Mexican
novel from the 1950's to the
1990's.  Examines the innovations in narrative form attempted by Mexican
novelists in these years, as well as the social and political subjects
with which they have grappled in their work.

Contents varies from year to year. Topic for fall 99 will be the study
of Spanish ballads ("romancero") and the relationship of this genre
with epic poetry and chivalric romances (for example, Arthurian
traditions and "Amadis de Gaula"),  as one of the future backgrounds of
Cervantes's "Don Quijote".

knowledge and expertise in aspects of Language Methodology by attending
