UNIV 111 THE SUSTAINABLE ENVIROMENT: POLI,CULT&SC Credits 3.00 Fall 99 This course is intended as an introduction to environmental studies and the concept of a sustainable environment for students from all divisions of the campus. The course will focus on the scientific basis for our current environmental situation, on social and cultural attitudes and values relating to the environment as represented in literature, history and public policy, and on the constant interaction among these various approaches. This course looks at persuasion in consumer advertising, politics, and other areas of life, using approaches from psychology, linguistics, and politial science. We will learn how to recognize persuasion attempts and what makes persuasion succeed or fail. Class projects combine conceptual understanding and application to real ad campaigns.
