UNIV   111 THE SUSTAINABLE ENVIROMENT: POLI,CULT&SC Credits 3.00  Fall 99
This course is intended as an introduction to environmental studies and
the concept of a sustainable environment for students from all
divisions of the campus. The course will focus on the scientific basis
for our current environmental situation,  on social and cultural
attitudes and values relating to the environment as represented in
literature, history and public policy, and on the constant interaction
among these various approaches.
Limited enrollment 20 per section.

UNIV   112 THE POWER OF PERSUASION                  Credits 3.00  Fall 99
Persuasion is fundamental part of human interaction: people attempt to
influence others behavior and beliefs in many ways. This course looks at
persuasion in consumer advertising, politics, and other areas of life,
using approaches from psychology, linguistics, and politial science. We
will learn how to recognize persuasion attempts and what makes
persuasion succeed or fail. Class projects combine conceptual
understanding and application to real ad campaigns. Enrollment limited

UNIV   113 TECHNOLOGICAL DISASTERS  AND CATASTROPHE Credits 3.00  Fall 99
This course will investigate case histories of disasters caused by human
error compounded by the enormous power of technology. The measures that
can be taken to avoid disaster will be examined, and risk assessment
will be explored.

How do scientists work to understand how the brain functions to sense
the environment and react to it, to transform sound and light into
understanding language and appreciating art to recall events and reason
about them? Brain structue and neurophysiology, scientific approaches to
studying brain and behavior.

A team taught course that addresses our cultural constructedness by
exploring the diversity of American cultues and by seeking ways of
investigating culture as an influence on behavior. Emphasis on
experimental learning.
