This course will examine some features of the legal position and social
realities of men and women in the Islamic world. We will discuss the
family and sexual ethics, the harem, polygamy, divorce, and eunuchs (who
played an important role in both the military and in certain religious
institutions) in order to understand how the boundaries of gender have
traditionally been drawn.

Exploration of the ways in which women writers in 14th-18th centuries
have developed their literary works (prose, poetry and drama). Emphasis
on historical, religious and political contexts. Readings will include
Hispanic & Latin American texts of Leonor Lopez de Cordoba, Tersa de
Cartagena, Sor Isabel de Villena (15th c.), Santa Teresa de Jesus,
Beatriz Bernal (16th c.), Maria de Zayas, and Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz

A historical and critical survey of women's roles in classical chinese
literature (poetry, prose, fiction and drama), as writers, readers,
critics, and protagonists, focusing on important literary texts and
some theoretical essays. Topics will include China's patriarchal
tradition and women's response, enculturing the female body and
femininizing male poetics, poems by women and poems in womens' s voice
women as domestic aliens and aliens protrayed as women; interplay of
popular culture and elite culture, etc., all readings are in English
translation. No previous knowledge of Chinese literature or the
Chinese lanuage is requires.

Part one focuses on the relation between critical theory and
poststructuralism. Readings from Marx, Althusser, Adorno, and Habermas
cover basic concepts like ideology, reification, etc. Part two looks at

The purpose of this course is to gain a broad understanding of the
important problems of contemporary feminist theories in French. We will
focus on the interrelated issues of gender, sexuality, race, ethics,
language, and power by exploring in depth primary texts in feminist
theory. Readings (in French) will include Beauvoir, Irigaray, Djebar,
and Brossard.
Prereq- require reading knowledge of French, recommend one course in
SWG, Philosophy, or Literary Theory.
Enrollment is limited to 12.
