LATI 301 ADVANCED LATIN: APULEIUS AND PETRONIUS Credits 3.00 Fall 00
Topic: The Roman Novel: An investigation of Petronius' Satyricon and Apuleius'
The Golden Ass, focusing on a close reading of the Cena and Cupid and Psyche
episodes, but with additional readings in translation. Topics include the
problem of genre; decadence and satire; allegory and the reception of the
novel; and the presentation of Roman sexuality. The course will focus
especially on the reflection and manipulation of Roman oral traditions and
folklore.
