This course is intended as an introduction to environmental studies and the
concept of a sustainable environment for students from all divisions of the
campus.  The course will focus on the scientific basus for our current
environmental situation, on social and cultural attitudes and values relating
to the the environment as represented in literature, history, and public
policy, and on the constant interaction among these various approaches.

This course will investigate case histories of disasters caused by human error
compounded by the enormous power of technology.  The measures that can be taken
to avoid disaster will be examined, and risk assessment will be explored.

UNIV 310   CREATING & MANAGING CHANGE               Credits 3.00  Fall 00
Each Tuesday from 2:30-5:30PM, this class will travel off campus to visit one
of the sites of a summer mentorship such the Read Commission, Baylor College of
Medicine, the Museum of Health and Medical Science, Enron, etc. Each
visit will
afford students the chance to talk with across-section of
mentors and learn
about the work of different organizations and the
challenges, opportunities and
ethical issues each faces.  In addition,
students will be asked to meet a four
to five times during the semester on
Thursdays from 2:30-5:30. These sessions
will help students carry out the three
assignments for the class: One
assignment requires students, in groups of
three, to secure two mentorships for
the coming summer.  The second
assignement involves working with a writing
consultant on two brief essays
for a Leadership Rice monograh. The third major
assignment is to do a
strategy paper that lays out the groundwork for a change
in some arena of
importance to the student. This paper will require students to
meet various
deadlines throughout the semester and it will help to develop
their
networking skills. The paper may relate to other work a student is doing
or
to goals after college. The class is three credits and is graded.
While
off-campus travel increases the time commitment for the class, the
seminars
do not require class preparations and there are no exams for the
class.

UNIV 314   GENETICS: BIOLOGICAL, CULTURE-HISTORICAL Credits 3.00  Fall 00
The course uses an interdisciplinary perspective to examine the claims and
counter-claims made regarding genetics and new technologies for identifying and
manipulating genetic material. The course will cover biological basics of
genes, DNA, and sequencing techniques; cultural and historical aspects to
genetics, including essentialism and eugenics past and present; ethical issues
arising from new genetic technologies; and policy issues. Also offered as ANTH
314 and BIOS  307.

A team-taught course that addresses our cultural constructedness by exploring
the diversity of American cultures and by seeking ways of investigating culture
as an influence on behavior.  Emphasis on experiential learing.

UNIV 323   CROSS-CULTURAL AWARENESS:RICE INTERNATIO Credits 1.00  Fall 00
A team-taught course that addresses the kind of comparisons and contrasts that
living abroad inevitably generates; especially intended both for students who
have spent substantive time outside the U.S. and for international students. We
want to initiate an internationally based seminar that helps participants
analyze and understand the personal and intellectual development that results
when their original culturally-acquired assumptions are challenged by the
experience of living in a new culture. Classroom exchanges will be enhanced by
projects focusing on experiential learning that will benefit the individual
students as well as the Rice community at large.
