CHIN 101 INTRODUCTION TO CHINESE LANGUAGE AND CUL Credits 5.00 Fall 01
For students with no background in Chinese. Introduction
to the Pinyin writing
system, and emphasis on the fundamental vocabulary and structure of Chinese
required for basic conversation. The Chinese writing system will be introduced,
but will not be emphasized until the second semester. Elements of Chinese
culture will be introduced through the language. Weekly attendance at the
language laboratory and participation in a weekly tutorial are required to
receive full credit. Students must complete CHIN 102 to receive distribution
credit for CHIN 101.

CHIN 201 INTRODUCTION TO CHINESE LANGUAGE AND CUL Credits 5.00 Fall 01
* DISTRIBUTION COURSE: GROUP I
Continuation of Chinese 102. Increasing emphasis will be paid to cultivating
reading and writing skills in Chinese. The class is conducted primarily in
Chinese. Weekly attendance at the language laboratory and participation in a
weekly tutorial required to receive full credit. Students must complete CHIN
202 to receive distribution credit for CHIN 201.
Prereq- Completion of Chin 102 or with instructor approval.

CHIN 301 INTERMEDIATE CHINESE LANGUAGE AND CULTUR Credits 4.00 Fall 01

Continuation of CHIN 202. Students will continue to make oral presentations in
class, in addition to gaining further reading practice. At the end of the
course, students should have familiarity with about 600 Chinese
characters and
the use of Chinese dictionaries, and be able to write short compositions using
Chinese characters.

Improves communication skills (speaking, reading, and writing Chinese) and

CHIN 335 INTRODUCTION TO CLASSICAL CHINESE LITERA Credits 3.00 Fall 01
Examination of the basic characteristics of classical Chinese novels, primarily
through six important works from the 16th to 18th centuries: Water margin,
Monkey, golden Lotus, Scholars, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and Dream of the
Red Chamber. Also offered as ASIA 355.
