JONE 311 INDIAN SOCIETY AND POLITICS Credits 3.00 Fall 01
The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the cultural mosaic that
compromises India, one of the world's oldest and most enduring civilizations.
More than 845 million people--about 14% of the world's population--live in
India. The course will focus on Indian politics--a lens through which we will
touch on a variety of aspects of the Indian experience, including history,
culture, religion, language and caste. Particular attention will be paid to
India's "democratic exceptionalism"--defying the post-colonial experience of
most of the developing world, India has remained a democracy virtually
throughout her independent history. The course will seek to examine both the
historical factors that have allowed India to sustain this remarkable record,
as well as the modern divisions that have, at times, threatened to tear the
country apart. In order to convey a broader view of the Indian experience,
rather than a purely "academic" focus, material for the course will be drawn
from a wide variety of sources, including academic works; works of novelists,
journalists and political leaders; and films and videos.
