Bronze Age urbanizations in Mesopotamia, Egypt, Indus Valley, and China.  Slide

This course will present the art and architecture of Greece, Asia Minor, and
Southern Italy (Magna Graecia) from the Bronze Age through the Hellenistic
period (ca 2000-30 B.C.) It will consider developoment of the classical orders
in architecture, innovations with painting and sculpture, and the cultural and
political signifigance of art un ancient Greek society.

The transition from the Bronze Age to the Iron Age. From myth to philosophy.
First expressions of subjectivism and relativism. Primarily ancient near
Eastern and Greek materials. Emphasis will be on art, philosophy, literature,
and religion.

This course will consider the architectural forms of the Roman world from its
Etruscan roots to late imperial innovations (6th century B.C. -4th century
A.D.). Although the course will cover some domestic architecture, emphasis will
be placed on the design of public monuments and how the buildings functioned
within their cultural contexts.

HART 326   ART AND ARCH IN THE MIDDLE EAST: LATE ME Credits 3.00  Spring 01
This course surveys the art and architecture of the Islamic Middle East from
the 13th century onwards. It examines the relationship of art to historical
context, it social uses, and the constuction of its meaning. Of special concern
are the visual production of the Manluk, II-Khanid, Timurid, Ottoman, and
Safavid states, and the development of imperial capitals such as Cairo,
Bukhara, Samakand, Istanbul, and Isfahan. Enrollment is limited to 40.

HART 328   WOMEN & VISUAL CULTURE IN ISLAMIC SOCIET Credits 3.00  Spring 01
This course places women at the center of explorations of visual culture in
Islamic societies. In-depth analyses of selected works of art and architecture
from various historical contexts highlight various issues, including women as
patrons of art and women as objects of representation. Theoretical debates on
women and gender in art history are introduced.

The course concerns self-representations of artists and their enviroments, both
personal and professional. The course topic is essentially icongraphic , but
considerable attention will be given to the history and techinquest of
printmaking through the early 19th century.

This course will examine the concept of "primitivism" and movements such as
Fauvism, Cubism, Dada, and Surrealsim in the late 19th and 20th centuries.
Focus will be placed on why artists such as Picasso, Wasily, Kandinsky, and
Ernst looked beyond Western Europe for inspiration, and to what extent did such
an interest reflect culture and gender stereotypes of the day.
