SPAN 405 STUDIES IN LATIN AMERERICAN LITERATURE Credits 3.00 Spring 01
Topic for Spring 2001: Latin America: Geography for the Savage Imagination. The
Barbarism of civilizaiton.
The image of Latin American was constructed from the
European imagination, from the concept of alterity that the Europeans had in
the Rennaisance, at the outset of the Modern Age. The founding image of the New
World as a space or barbarity and of "calibanesque" instincts was initiated by
the English playwright, William Shakespeare, in "The Tempest." Between Ariel
and Caliban is woven a long and wide-ranging tradition of reflections and
icongraphy that have permeated Latin American culture since that time. The
course will examine both the written texts and visual-icongraphic materials
which founded this tradition from the sixteenth through the ninteenth
centuries, and will include some contemporary examples, in order to observe how
certain Eurocentric axioms repeat, rearticulate, and renew themselves.
