The artistic, political, scientific, and religious achievements of Greek
civilization imprinted themselves on the Western world in such a way that all
of Western history, literature, art and thought up to the present has been
fundamentally influenced by Greeks. This course will survey the Greek
achievement from Homer through the birth of democracy in Athens to the spread
of Greek civilization by the conquests of Alexander the Great. No

Premodern Japan has often been portrayed as a "closed country," unique in its
glorious isolation. In this survey, we will examine the cultural, social, and
economic development of Japan within a regional and world context, focusing on
such issues as the origins of the Japanese people; the contentious relations
between Korea and Japan; the importance of Japan in European expansion; and the
relations of Japan to a vibrant intellectual and cultural world in East Asia.

This course traces the history of American voting rights from the colonial
period through the present and focuses our attention on changing ideas about

This lecture/discussion course considers the last century of American labor
history through a close analysis of journalism, fiction, and film. Topics will
include: industrialization, immigration, gender, inductrial unionism, race
relations, syndicalist, socialist and communist organizing, agrarian labor, and
deindustrialization. Reading will be supplemented by required evening film

This seminar traces the history and politics of the Arab-Israeli conflict. It
delves into both Palestinian and Israeli understandings of the past and present

This seminar introduces students to the debates on the history of slavery in
human society. It will examine case studies in Africa, Asia and Europe and
compare the changing nature of slavery over time. The focus will be on a
number of comparative themes including: slavery and the state; slavery and

HIST 471 COMPARATIVE SETTLER STATES: THE INVENTIO Credits 3.00 Fall 02
Out of modern European colonial expansion a new type of state arose in settler
societies such as the southern U.S., South Africa, French Algeria, and
Palestine-Israel. The social structure included both racially privileged and
subordinated work forces. This seminar will explore the history of "white
supremacist democracy" in these states and others, such as Australia, New
Zealand, and Russia. Topics will include genocide and forced labor of people of
color as essential or accidental ingredients of settler politics; the
contribution of Nazi Judeocide in W.W. II to the acceleration process of
globalizing settlerdom; and the continuation of this trend in postcolonial
Europe. Enrollment is limited to 15.

seminar examines the history and sociology of the modern city in the U.S. The
focus will be on understanding the processes shaping urban development and

perspective, the city as social form, and the uses of space to solve social
