Continuation of Chinese 101. More attention will be paid to the Chinese writing
system (Chinese characters) while conversation skills still receive priority.
Weekly attendance at the language laboratory and participation in a weekly

Continuation of Chinese 201. At the completion of this course, students should
be able to converse at an intermediate level, and will be able to approach
native language materials with the aid of Chinese language dictionaries. The
class is conducted primarily in Chinese. Weekly attendance at the language
laboratory and participation in a weekly tutorial required to receive full
credit. Enrollment is limited to 20.

CHIN 320   COMMERCIAL CHINESE                       Credits 3.00  Spring 02
This course is designed for students who will use Chinese in business and
professional settings. The class aims to develop students' language proficiency
in business communication, as well as to focus on the current socio-economic
situations of Greater China. The primary emphasis will be placed on listening
comprehension, speaking fluency and reading competence. The task-based class
activities provide students with the opportunities to practice Chinese and
familiarize them with the proper etiquette int he business world. The key
topics include the development of private enterprise, the emergence of banking
reforms, the Chinese stock market, the trends in marketing, and the changing
Chinese management practices, and foreign trade initiatives. Students will also
learn to use a Chinese word processor to complete their assignments in this
class. Enrollment is limited to 20.

CHIN 333   TAIWAN FILM & MODERN TAIWANESE LITERATUR Credits 3.00  Spring 02
This course introduces literature and film from Taiwan, with a focus on
Taiwan's literary and cultural production since Taiwan's modernist movement of
the 1960s.  The course is taught within the context of Taiwan's historical and
economic development apart from China.  An overriding theme of the course is
how Taiwan's contact with the "outside" -- Japan, China, and the West has
resulted in a Taiwanese cultural identity, and how this new identity has led to
both creation of new literary products and a reevaluation of the whole of
Taiwan's cultural history.  Major fictive works to read include those from the
modernist, nativist, and post-martial law periods; major directors to be
studied include Edward Yang, Hou Hsiao-hsien, and Ang Lee.  Also offered as
ASIA 333. Enrollment limited to 20.

CHIN 346   HISTORY OF THE CHINESE LANGUAGE          Credits 3.00  Spring 02
This course investigates major developments in the history of Chinese,
emphasizing structural changes from Archaic to Modern Chinese. We will examine
patterns of thought and cultural perceptions as reflected in vocabulary change.
Introduction to sound changes in Chinese and the evolution of the writing
system. Students are required to have basic knowledge of Chinese or have taken
an introductory linguistics course. Enrollment is limited to 20.

CHIN 412   ADVANCED CHINESE LANGUAGE AND CULTURE II Credits 3.00  Spring 02
Continuation of CHIN 411. Read native Chinese language materials and develop
oral skills to express opinions, make comments and critique social issues.
Homework includes writing collaborative scripts to perform in class.
Prereq- CHIN 411 or ability to write 1000 characters.
