WIES 305 ADVANCED JOURNALISM: ETHICS, MEDIA LAW, Credits 3.00 Spring 02
The class will be a mixture of in-depth reporting assignments, media law
studies and ethics discussions. Just as clear as writing style is advantageous
no matter what you do, understanding the legalities and ethical decisions and
implications behind the news is beneficial as well. Information is currency and
understanding it can make you richer. Rice graduates not only collect
information from the media, they're quoted in it, covered by it and writers of
it in one way or another.
The course will focus on reporting techniques,
focusing on access to government records and documents, and gathering and
examining material related to public issues; communications law and the balance
of power between the government and the media; researching and writing-in-depth
news and feature stories; the role of the editor in a news operation; and the
ethical implications of changing media coverage including repercussions of new
technologies, the blurring of information and entertainment, the consolidation
of media holdings.
Prereq- WILL 205: Introduction to Journalism or permission of the instructor.
