ARAB 101   INTRODUCTION TO MODERN ARABIC LANGUAGE A Credits 5.00  Fall 03
This course introduces students to the Modern Standard Arabic Language as well
as some cultural aspects related to the Arab world. Within a weekly five class
contact hours, students will develop listening and speaking skills through
communicative drills. They will also learn the writing
system to read and
express simple ideas and topics. Each lesson  integrates the four language
skills. Assignments requiring computer work is an integral part of the class.

ARAB 201   INTERMEDIATE MODERN ARABIC LANGUAGE  AND Credits 4.00  Fall 03
* DISTRIBUTION COURSE: GROUP I
In this second-year Arabic class, students will develop more proficiency in the
four skills. In a weekly four class contact hours, students will be introduced
to more complex semantic and syntactic structures, which they
will demonstrate
in a variety of oral presentations as well as in their reading of texts and
writing, all of which are embed in cultural content. There is more emphasis on
derivations and etymology, which may entail use of dictionary. Assignments
requiring computer work is an integral part of the class. For complete list of

Advanced readings and discussions focus on literary and cultural topics,
ranging from classical to contemporary.  Integrates advanced grammatical
constructions with comprehension  and communication skills.
