HIND 101   ELEMENTARY HINDI I                       Credits 5.00  Fall 03
An in-depth introduction to modern Hindi including the Devanagari script. In an
intellectually challenging environment, through a combination of graded texts,
written assignments, audio-visual material and computer-based exercises, this
course provides cultural insights and increases proficiency in understanding,
speaking, reading and writing Hindi. Emphasis is on spontaneous self-expression
in the language. No prior background in Hindi assumed. Enrollment will be
limited to 20.
*Elementary Hindi I will meet TTH 2:30pm-3:20pm and W 3:00pm
-3:50pm.

HIND 201   INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED HINDI I            Credits 5.00  Fall 03
* DISTRIBUTION COURSE: GROUP I
Through extensive use of cultural documents including feature films, radio
broadcasts, as well as graded literary and non-literary texts, this course
continues to build students' proficiency in understanding, speaking, reading
and writing Hindi. Provides a space for meaningful interaction with authentic
materials and their related cultures. Furthers the student's appreciation of
cultural nuances. Emphasis is placed on spontaneous self-expression in the
language.
Prereq- Hindi 101/102, placement test, or permission of instructor.

HIND 335   SOUTH ASIAN LITERATURE, POETRY, AND POPU Credits 3.00  Fall 03
* DISTRIBUTION COURSE: GROUP I
Consolidates and builds on the intermediate/advanced level course HIND 202.
Focuses of the course will vary each year depending on both, the needs and
interests of the students in the class, as well as contemporary issues.
Readings range from classical, to modern 20th century literature and poetry.
Various art forms, including theater and film, will be
thematically related to
the readings.  Prerequisite: Hind 202 or permission of instructor.

Students will work with instructor closely to acquire teaching skills in
