WIES 398 SOCIETY AND HEALTH Credits 3.00 Fall 03
This course provides an overview of the society and health field. It explores
how broad social, cultural and economic inequalities in society affect health.
Despite spending more money on health care than any other country in the world
the United States has some of the poorest health indicators of any developed
country. Why is this? Some would argue it is the wide and widening social and
economic inequalities in American society. The course will explore some the
major explanations for this observation. Why is it that countries like Costa
Rica with few economic resources can have an average life expectancy greater
than the United States? This will be explored in the context of how societies
function. How do these social and economic factors get 'under the skin' to
affect health, illness and disease? The society and health course will consider
these and other questions. The course will address the policies that can be
considered to mend these inequalities. The society and health course is
designed for students interested in the intersection of the health and
biological sciences, the social sciences and public policy. Junior or senior
standing is highly-recommended.
