CHIN 102   INTRODUCTORY CHINESE II                  Credits 5.00  Spring 03
Continuation of Chinese 101. More attention will be paid to the Chinese writing
system (Chinese characters) while conversation skills still receive priority.
Weekly attendance at the language laboratory and participation in a weekly
tutorial required to receive full credit. At the conclusion of 102, students
will be able to write approximately 200 Chinese characters, and be able to
perform communicative tasks appropriat to this range of characters. Enrollment
is limited to 20.
Prereq-CHIN 101 or permission of instructor.

CHIN 202   INTRODUCTION TO CHINESE LANGUAGE AND CUL Credits 5.00  Spring 03

Continuation of Chinese 201. At the completion of this course, students should
be able to converse at an intermediate level, and will be able to approach
native language materials with the aid of Chinese language dictionaries. The
class is conducted primarily in Chinese. Weekly attendance at the language
laboratory and participation in a weekly tutorial required to receive full
credit. Enrollment is limited to 20.

CHIN 212   ACCELERATED BEGINNING CHINESE LANGUAGE A Credits 4.00  Spring 03

More attention will be paid to reading narrative texts. Writing will be focused
on skills necessary for basic personal needs, with some introduction to writing
more advanced social correspondence. At the completion of 212, students will be
able to write approximately 400 Chinese characters, and be able to perform
communicative tasks appropriate to this range of characters.
Prereq-CHIN 211 or ability to write 200 Chinese characters.

CHIN 302   INTERMEDIATE CHINESE LANGUAGE AND CULTUR Credits 4.00  Spring 03

Continuation of CHIN 301. By the end of CHIN 302, students
should be able to
study Chinese on an independent basis, as more native language materials will
be used in this course. Students will have reading knowledge of approximately
800 Chinese characters. Enrollment is limited to 20.

CHIN 312   TEXTS FROM POPULAR CULTURE: ADVANCED INT Credits 3.00  Spring 03
Presents the Chinese language through media such as film, popular songs, and
short excerpts of popular fiction. Students will learn to distinguish between
colloquial Chinese and the more formal language of written Chinese. Students
are expected to gain in sophistication of expression in both speaking and
writing. Reading/writing practice will be directed from written versions of
oral texts and written texts such as plays or short-stories. Students wil do
regular writing assignments which reinforce reading/listening abilities.
Prereq- CHIN 302 or 311, or permission of instructor. Ability to write
approximately 700 characters assumed.

CHIN 314   COMMERCIAL CHINESE: ADVANCED INTERMEDIAT Credits 3.00  Spring 03
Designed for students who will use Chinese in business and professional
settings. Will develop students' language proficiency and focus on current
socio-economic situations of Greater China. Primary emphasis is on listening
comprehension, speaking fluency and reading competence. Task-based activities
practice Chinese and familiarize students with proper etiquette in the business
world. Key topics include: development of private enterprise, emergence of
banking reforms, Chinese stock market, trends in marketing, and changing
Chinese managament practices and foreign trade initiatives. Students learn to
use a Chinese word processor. Enrollment is limited to 20.
Prereq- CHIN 302 or 311, or permission of instructor. Ability to write
approximately 700 characters assumed.

CHIN 322   TAIWANESE LANGUAGE & LITERATURE          Credits 3.00  Spring 03
* DISTRIBUTION COURSE: GROUP I
This course contains two parts running concurrently every week. Part One
focuses on language acquisition: students learn to speak Taiwanese. Online
textbook is Taiwanese on Campus, written and recorded for the Web by L. Chen.
Emphasis is on dialy, practical expressions. Teaching materials include
Taiwanese songs. Part Two is examination of Taiwanese nativist literature with
special attention to its language/cultural and political/historical background.
Enrollment is limited to 20.

This course gives students with advanced proficiency in Chinese the opportunity
to acquire teaching experience in tutorial format.  Regular meetings with

CHIN 412   ADVANCED CHINESE LANGUAGE AND CULTURE II Credits 3.00  Spring 03
Continuation of CHIN 411. Read native Chinese language materials and develop
oral and writing skills to express opinions, make comments and critique social
issues. Homework includes writing collaborative scripts to perform in class.
Prereq- CHIN 411 or ability to write 1000 characters.
