ESCI 446 SOLID EARTH GEOPHYSICS Credits 4.00 Spring 03
A review of the structure of the Earth and key physical processes that have
shaped it. The course topics include the geometry of plate tectonics, past
plate motions and paleomagnetism, seismology, the gravitational field,
geochronology, heat in the Earth, and the features
of continental and oceanic
lithosphere. Laboratory exercises are computer based. Each involves using
data and modern software to constrain aspects of the Earth's structure or
history. Some labs are based on classical analyses from the literature, while
others are based on observations, acquired using the Internet, of current
geophysical
events.

ESCI 527 QUANTITIVE PETROLEUM GENERATION AND MIGR Credits 3.00 Spring 03
This course focuses on the integration of organic geochemical information into
the geologic framework to estimate the quantities of oil and gas available for
entrapment within a basin or a series of prospects. Participants will learn
how to apply modern principles and procedures of quantitative petroleum
generation and migration analysis to enable them to evaluate exploration and
exploitation opportunities. The course includes lectures and workshop sessions.
The course lectures are outlined below. The workshop sessions will
interactively involve the participants in a practical, hands-on simulation of
an exploration license bid-round where they will carry out a comprehensive
basin evaluation study and objectively rank prospects on the basis of
statistical probabilities of hydrocarbon charge, reservoir, trap and seal.
