The course provides an introduction to the theory and practice of
teaching a second language.  The course examines the process of
language-learning from social, psychological, and linguistic
perspectives and also covers some commonly used teaching "methods" such
as:  The Audiolingual Method, Situational Language Teaching, The Natural
Approach, and TPR.

In this course we will investigate the relationship between the
interpretation of utterances (semantics) and the context in which they
are used (pragmatics) by developing an understanding of how the
intentions of the speaker/writer as interpreted by the hearer/reader
influences the meaning assigned to an utterance on a given occasion.
The contribution to discourse of both socially and linguistically
context will be convered.
