At the Student Center, we have a number of different services to make your life easier and more convenient, including the use of advanced audio/visual equipment, a coffee shop, pub, and many more. Please use the links below to browse our services; please take advantage of them!

Retail Services

Rice Coffeehouse

"Proud purveyors of America's most socially acceptable drug," the Coffeehouse won't let you down before that take-home exam at midnight. Peddling such wares as espresso, cappuccino, hot tea and your plain ole cup of joe, the Coffeehouse will satisfy caffeine cravings and also accommodate decaf lovers. The Coffeehouse is a student-run business that occasionally hosts a wide variety of performances - watch the calendar on the nearby bulletin board. They also cater small meetings; call x8073. The Coffeehouse accepts cash and Tetra points.

Willy's Pub

Run by students, for students, Willy's features lunchtime Quizno's subs and Uno's pizza that students can pay for with cash, credit, or even Tetra points. After 5 p.m., Willy's offers bottled and draft beers for those 21 and over (check their Web site below for current menu offerings and prices). While Pub Night on Thursdays promises a big fun-filled crowd, the quieter daytime hours allow patrons to relax in front of the big-screen TV, study, or take advantage of the pool table or wireless Internet. To schedule a college or student organization event in the Pub, contact Willy's Pub External Assisstant Manager Marcus Roman.

Willy's now offers separate themed nights each night of the week!
Tuesdays: Generally College nights. Check their Web site to see if it's a separate event this week.
Wednesdays: Trivia night! Bring everyone you know, get on a team, and compete to win.
Thursdays: Themed party nights! Look out for '80s night, goth night, country & western night...

University Bookstore

The University Bookstore is the main stop for books, Rice paraphernalia, computer products and office supplies. If you forgot your mom's birthday, you can find a gift for her here. The store also offers a small selection of toiletries. Seniors, drop by to order your class ring, and pay attention to notices regarding commencement regalia.

13th Street

The newest addition to the Student Center, 13th Street offers paninis, salads, wraps, hoagies, etc. as well as a convenience store that offers health and beauty aids, snacks, grab 'n go healthy foods, Red Bull, and assorted grocery items. It is also now available for breakfast! Come enjoy a breakfast taco or a bagel and cream cheese.

Sammy's Cafe

DAILY MENU

Stop by for a delicious lunch featuring pizza, burgers, chicken sandwiches and daily specials. Sammy's accepts cash and Tetra points for any items, as well as most major credit cards.

University Copy Center

The University Copy Center is the newest addition to the Student Center Retail Operations. Give them a call at 713-348-3996 for any and all of your copy needs!

General Services

The Student Center also offers a myriad of basic services to help you in your everyday life.

ATM:

The Student Center has a full-service Chase automated teller machine located in the Sammy's/Coffeehouse Lobby.

Bulletin Boards:

Located next to the Coffeehouse, these boards are usually packed with interesting announcements: items for sale, job openings, or meeting notices. Go to the Information Desk to have fliers approved for posting.

Computer Lab/Terminals:

Check your e-mail or surf the web at the computer lab located right outside of the Academic Advising Office or any of the three conveniently located iMac express terminals outside Sammy's and at the Information Desk.

Also, on the lower level, the Student Organizations Resource Center houses a lab with three PCs, three Macs, and an Owlnet printer. See their section for more information.

Copiers:

Located on the lower level, across from FedEx Kinko's, is a coin copier to assist with those last minute copy needs. Black and white copies cost $.10/each.

Courtesy Phones:

Courtesy phones are located throughout the Student Center facility. Please dial the last for digits for on-campus calls or "9" to access an outside local line.

Information Desk:

The Information Desk is a valuable resource center for those who are lost, bored or uninformed. Please visit them at their Web site.

Lockers:

Day lockers are available for all patrons to use. These lockers are located outside the Campus Store. The service is free to all Rice community members.

Lounge Space:

Check the floor plan or wander the building to find a quiet place to relax or study.

Mail Services:

A drop box for outgoing campus and USPS mail is located at the Information Desk.

Notary Services:

A Notary Public is available in the Student Administration Office on the second floor of the RMC side of the Student Center (above the Grand Hall) or the Student Activities Office in the cloisters.

Off-Campus Housing Information:

In addition to the Campus Housing Guide published each Spring Semester by the Student Association, the Student Center oversees the Off-Campus Housing page.

Recycling:

Containers for aluminum, glass, mixed paper and plastics number 1 and 2 are located throughout the facility.

Student Organizations Resource Center:

In addition to the Clubs Office recently moved to the Cloisters (see map), there is a Student Organizations Resource Center and storage area in the basement of the RMC. Six Owlnet terminals, a printer, comfortable seating and a work table are available for student organizations.

Please note: The SORC is available for 24-hour access. However, to obtain this, organization presidents must e-mail a list of their members to Pam Shefman, Associate Director of the Student Center, at pamelyn [at] rice.edu. Students do NOT need to be members of any specific organization to use the space during normal Student Center operating hours.

  1. Space is not guaranteed to organizations that currently have space; you must reapply each year.
  2. Applications are generally due the week before spring finals; This year, the deadline is April 18, 2008 by Noon.
  3. Groups granted space will be notified 3-5 days after the application due date.
  4. Groups vacating their office, cabinet, or locker space at the end of the year must have all of their belongings cleared and their space cleaned by the last day of spring finals.
  5. Organizations granted new space in the SORC for the upcoming year may begin moving into their space as early as the first Monday after spring finals.

Vending Machines:

Soda and snack vending machines are located next to Willy's Pub in the basement.

Wireless Internet:

Portable access to e-mail and the Internet is an immediate benefit. The wireless system requires a valid Rice computing account and password, as well as device specific authentication.
