Fast Food

by Christof Spieler

"Fast and Cheap," a familiar college student wish, usually ends up meaning fast food. There's plenty within a short drive from Rice, though almost all of it is far enough away to make walking a pain.

One of the few establishments of any kind you can walk to easily from campus is Subway , a block south of the Graduate House on Main Street. A similar sub sandwich chain, Blimpie's , is on Holcombe near Main and on Kirby north of University. Look for discounts on your Silver Saver Card.

Drive south on Main Street, then turn left after Harvey Suites onto Holcombe, and you'll find most of the major chains: a Burger King on the corner (known for its slow service) and two blocks down, Taco Bell , McDonald's and Kentucky Fried Chicken . In the next block (just after you cross Kirby) are Wendy's , Pizza Hut and International House of Pancakes .

There's a Long John Silver's further south. Take Main to Kirby, turn left and then the next right on Old Spanish Trail.

A few blocks north of University, Kirby has McDonald's , Burger King , Wendy's and Taco Bell . Just past the 59 underpass is Taco Cabana , which serves decent Mexican take-out and stays open late. Kirby also has a number of better restaurants including the Kirby Grill (yuppieburgers), the Goode Company places (barbeque, seafood, Tex-Mex, and burgers) and Bennigan's (next to Taco Cabana).
